Can OP handle debates and serious discussions?

We had a forum when OP was originally up called the "Flaming and Ranting Forum". It was just a huge pile of trolling and flaming and it always got way out of hand too quickly.

Point is, on the internet there is always someone that thinks that he or she is funny and posts something stupid with the hopes of getting a rise out of the rest. Unfortunately, 99% of the time these people aren't funny and ruin it for everyone else.

Yes, I agree that there is a small population on these forums that could handle it, however there is a very frequent problem here, and it's the lack of knowledge that people have of topics that they are trying to contribute to.

It just ends in overall fail. My 2 cents.

I disagree. I think that if you disregard the flaming and ranting and only allow people to seriously, respectfully, discuss and debate a topic it could be something. I mean with a strict set of rules it could work. I understand what your getting at and you obviously experienced it but I still think it could work.

This would be different and if someone does post retarded responses, you can easily remove their permissions from posting in that forum. It's that simple.

I would actually really like to see this happen even though it most likely never will. I do think that we could handle it if the restrictions were like this: you fuck up, you dont post in that section again. If that happened then people (intelligent ones at least) may actually think about what they post before they post it... plus there are people on the forums (e.g. crisps, temp12, dylan, etc.) who would do very well in/deserve a debate forum and despite the fact that many of them are trolls, theyre all smart enough to handle it.. and if they cant, then dont let them post in that section.

Scarface, the problem was that so many people would get butthurt or caught up in their arguments.. then it would slowly start happening in threads all over the site. If the flaming was concentrated in that one area it would have been fine, but it just caused too much trouble

I think the first intent of that forum was just exactly to post serious discussions, then later the purpose of it got twisted and out of hand then threads such as "fag of the month" were posted.

I'd like the idea of having a forum with just serious discussions and topics because I feel that the forums' community could actually use some more knowledge on the IRL world/topics out there today, especially considering most of us can't really interpret it to have our own opinions.

Yet, the fact of immaturity still remains. So pretty much the existence of a forum topic that just contained serious discussions relies solely on the users themselves

I can handle it, but there is something that usually ticks the flaming and thats the all knowing, down talkers. Thats when flaming starts, but if you say your side of your opinion without adding a subtle flame in there, or anything that completely disrespects one opinion. thats when it gets hairy.

i'd just like to point out that i am noticing a trend here. all of the oldfags on here are very much against this, because we have been here long enough to know that it could lead to no good; while all the newer people think it is a good idea.

truthfully, 99% of people are not good at having debates without being personally offended or being purposefully offensive. if this section was made, which it wont be because ownage knows it would lead to shenanigans, it would be an utter failure. even with your ideas of strict moderation or not allowing those who troll/flame on this section it would be failure because chances are, eventually there would literally be 2 people allowed on that section. truthfully, i think that having a section for this is unnecessary and people can debate other places. they already get deleted or banned if it turns into a troll-fest.

If people on here matured a bit I would be all for it..

It's sad that no matter how much I ask and tell people to cut back on the overall gayness and trolling, it never happens. It is all linked to a select group of people who constantly make negative posts, or just treat the site as a second 4chan. I think a lot more people would register here and stay if there were more people having intelligent conversations. What's the solution to this? I hate having to ban people.. I try to make a ban my absolute last resort.. but perhaps that should change.
