Have any of you guys heard about this operating software? Are any of you currently using it?
I have a teacher at my school that would install the OS for free and he tells me that is faster than windows and better than a mac, and that all my laptop crashing problems will go away. What do you guys think of Ubuntu if you know what it is.

Yeah i do have Vista, my laptop always crashes randomly and when ever i try to turn it back on it just turns off by itself. I will consider windows 7 then.

It sounds like you're far from knowledgeable when it comes to computers so I'll tell you to stay away from Ubuntu. The latest Kernel release is fairly user friendly but installing programs and software requires knowledge of command line.

Like that guy above said, find yourself a copy of windows 7. It's pretty much a cleaned up version of vista that they actual debugged and tested.

    Good luck.

PS. Try ubuntu though. Ask your teacher for a copy of the bootable CD and get yourself familiar with the software. It's an incredibly useful piece of software and does several things that Windows cannot.

The problem is that it tends to create more problems than it fixes. For example, Ubuntu will probably not work with all your hardware. And there isn't as much software for it.

I have used ubunto in the past it's not too bad, id suggest that you get him to install Kubunto since Kubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the KDE environment that makes installing programs a lot easier (comes with a program that let's you search through thousands of useful programs, gives you a description of what the program does and downloads and installs the program for you, so that if you do not have knowledge of Linux based systems and how to use the command prompt it is not that big of a deal.

Know that ubunto and kubunto do have issues with playing most games but you can use Wine to simulate a windows environment but around 80% of the games are glitchy (or have an Ebill super AI that can hit you with a pistol from across the screen) IE Css runs at about 15 fps on my old linux tower and is not usable for the most part but you can vary easily dualboot TinyXP and have the best of both worlds

There is a lot of help on forums for Linux and a lot of groups that will help you out if you run into a problem, and if your willing to spend the time to learn, all the information you need to use Linux is out there for free.

You do have someone to help you so it may be good to give it a try, if you dislike it, you can all ways just reinstall windows and if you like it/get good with it knowledge of Linux systems does look really good on a resume

If you don't want to switch over to Linux and don't want to have the hassle of finding a good copy of winXp Try downloading a Copy of TinyXp it uses a lot less system resources then a full copy of windows and it's free

(Edit: I use win7 on my gaming Computer and i love it and haven't had any issues with it yet, unlike vista, if your willing to pay for it go for win7 for sure it's worth it)

Give ubuntu a try, Don't let these fools make it sound super hard. Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows install it just like any other program, restart your computer and you can switch between ubuntu and windows vista.

My girlfriend and her sister have been converted, they both love it. It loads up really fast, especially 10.04. 9 time out of 10 i don't have to do anything for a fresh install. Sometimes I have to install a driver, Which is really easy to do in ubuntu. You can just goto sys>admin> hardware drivers. It automatically searches for the latest drivers for the device that inst working.

Flash on 64bit is awesome let me tell you. So fast you would not believe it.
Plus theres alot of tools that you can use. Hacking Wifi in minutes is something i use weekly.

Its very Simple give it a try.

man..what steps do you follow to do it?
I tried a couple of times (aircrack suite) with my onboard wifi card and with another dlink usb adaptor but i can't make it work in the end. I get stuck in the airplay-ng step
