I personally prefer Frostwire as opposed to Limewire, but what it comes down to is this.

If you're getting virus's from Limewire, you shouldn't be downloading anything.

Frostwire is essentially the same as limewire, it just has a different interface. It doesn't even have less porn. viruses etc. The only differences between these two are the Owner, the location of the corporation and the amount of access that you get as a free user. Frostwire is a less restrictive free version of Limewire Pro but the problem still remains with you getting viruses from it.

Getting frostwire won't stop your onslaught of viruses, you need an alternative to p2p sharing altogether.

Try what Purdy said in the first reply to your thread, that's how at least 75% of users get their files.

What antivirus are you using? Even with some of the worst antivirus programs out there as long as you keep it updated you're fine. I used to use Symantec (which is the worst) and it scans every file and usually finds the virus if it's there. Hopefully we can do an upgrade in this section of your computer. Let me know.

    You saved yourself.

Both limewire + frostwire are a part of the GNUtella network. If I'm not mistaken the only difference is frostwire is open source and completely free.

Anyways, I use limewire for single tracks, and I use torrents + waffles.fm/what.cd for my full albums.

If you are worried about viruses, I would suggest upgrading your anti-virus to either Avira, or Panda Cloud Antivirus.

Also make sure you set up the proper restrictions in limewire, so you are only downloading mainly .mp3's and such. And no files smaller than I'd say 1,000kb.

    .
Actually you'll find you're incorrect. Frostwire is open source yes, however they are both owned by completely separate entities. Frostwire is owned within US borders by a former Limewire employee, and is completely separate from Limewire. Limewire is a foreign company.

They both use similar networks (gnutella as you said) and are based off of the same java source code.

Forstwire has something Limewire does not though...a chat room. This isn't really important to myself however it is a pretty neat and incredibly functional feature.

The most important difference between the two is the amount of connections allowed. The free version of limewire only allows you 3 connections I believe, while Frostwire allows for 5 connections. This gives Frostwire a speed advantage. Limewire PRO does allow 5 peers though so if you're willing to pay, it's the same speed.

Its 22gb or so. I would like to see purdy download it within minutes.

    @ Bacon,
since they both use the gnutella network, wouldnt they return almost identical search results?

Either way, I don't see much difference between frostwire/limewire.
I would go with limewire pro tho.

Limewire PRO has a much larger file database, meaning more results from your search, but it is also a storage hub for porn, virus's, keyloggers, you name it. Not to mention the ads that appear everywhere.

Frostwire achieves the same speed as Limewire PRO, has NO ads except for one in the middle offering you free legit music at the start, and now has a database large enough to find everything that you need. I have never searched on it and not found what I was looking for.

You should try it out before you commit to Limewire. I think you'll be impressed.

I have used frostwire while using various *nix distros.

But I wouldn't call it a database, seeing as how its all P2P is it not?

It is all p2p, I just referred to it as a database for ease of explanation. The database being every file that every user is currently sharing.
